Pemberley

Lyme Park is the location of Pemberley in the 1995 mini series.

Pemberley is Mr. Darcy's country estate, and also home to his wife and his sister.

Overview[]

While describing the estate at the centre of the novel, Jane Austen used uncharacteristically explicit symbolism to represent Mr. Darcy's geographical home. Indeed, during Elizabeth's first visit to the estate, she was charmed by the beauty of the surrounding countryside, by the genuine refined elegance of Pemberley House itself, and by the reformed Mr. Darcy himself. While she had rejected his first proposal by the time she visited Pemberley, and her feelings toward him were still confused, his home's genuine beauty, his housekeeper's earnest praises, and his own courteous behaviour brought about a drastic change in her opinions of him.

Description[]

Pemberley is located within five miles from the town of Lambton, in the county of Derbyshire.

Pemberley House itself is a large and handsome stone building well-situated on the opposite side of a valley, framed by a winding road, and backed by a ridge of high woody hills. In front of the house was a natural stream the banks of which were "neither formal nor falsely adorned". The house also included:

  • A hall.
  • A large, well-proportioned, and well-furnished dining-parlour.
  • Windows through which one could sufficiently admire the beautiful Pemberley grounds.
  • Lofty and handsome rooms furnished with a taste that, while suitable to Darcy's considerable fortune, Elizabeth had to admire, for there was nothing that was "gaudy or uselessly fine, and there was less splendour and more real elegance" than Rosings.
  • A mantel-piece over which hung numerous miniatures, including Darcy's and Wickham's.'
  • A room with a musical instrument for Georgiana.
  • A lobby.
  • An extremely pretty, elegant, and airy sitting-room that was for Georgiana's personal enjoyment.
  • A picture gallery comprised of Georgiana's own crayon drawings and numerous other beautiful portraits (including Darcy's).
