Mrs. Bates is a character in Emma. She is a very old lady, and "past everything but tea and quadrille". She was married to the vicar of Highbury before his death.

She lives with her single daughter, Miss Bates, in Highbury. They often spent time at Hartfield upon Mr. Woodhouse's invitation.[1]

She had at least two daughters, Miss Bates and another daughter who married a Mr. Fairfax, producing one child, Jane Fairfax, who was orphaned.
