Mrs. Charles Musgrove is a character in Persuasion. She is married to Charles Musgrove, Esq. of Uppercross in Somerset. She is mother to Charles, the heir to her husband's estate; Richard, who died serving in the navy; two unmarried daughters, Henrietta and Louisa; and several younger children who are still children, including Harry, the youngest. From Charles's marriage to Mary Elliot, she has two grandsons: Charles and Walter.

Mr. and Mrs. Musgrove are friendly and hospitable, but not educated or elegant, but their children are more modern. They have the wealth to send the daughters to a very good school, and to clothe them in finery.[1] Her sister Mrs. Hayter married a man with less wealth and standing than Mr. Musgrove, but there is no bitterness or envy between the sisters or their families. While the Musgroves aren't thrilled that Henrietta wishes to marry their nephew Charles Hayter, they are willing to accept it for the sake of her happiness.

Traits and characteristics[]

Mrs. Musgrove is described to be large, the same as her husband. This, according to her daughter in law, makes it so it's very uncomfortable to travel with the two of them in their carriage[1].

She is good natured, friendly, and hospitable—like her husband. She is not at all elegant nor educated.
