Mrs. Norris moves to the White House after the death of Mr. Norris. She must move from the parsonage because it would pass to Dr. Grant. The house is just large enough for Mrs. Norris, her servants, and a spare room for guests. Mrs. Norris wanting to receive guests is one of the excuses she uses to not take responsibility for Fanny Price, whom Lady Bertram wanted to send with Mrs. Norris so the girl could offer companionship to her aunt. Instead, Fanny became companion to Lady Bertram, after Sir Thomas goes on a trip to Antigua.
